Goochland County, VA

Goochland County, with a population of roughly 22,000, is located just west of Richmond, Virginia. It is bounded on the north by I-65 and on the south by a 40-mile stretch of the James River. Formed in 1727, Goochland was the first county created from the original eight shires that made up Virginia at the time. It is within a two hours’ drive of Washington, DC and Virginia Beach. It is served by the Richmond International Airport (RIC).

Although Goochland has long been considered a traditionally rural county, it is currently experiencing a notable growth spurt. This is due in large part to the recent completion of Route 288, a four-lane regional highway that links Goochland with its neighboring counties and connects nearby I-64 to I-95. Industry has also been attracted to the area following the opening of the Tuckahoe Creek Service District and West Creek, a 3,500-acre business park that now houses the county’s two largest employers, Capital One Bank Services and CarMax.

Goochland’s three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school serve over 2,500 students. Advanced high school students have the opportunity to take freshman-level college courses in a unique arrangement with J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. There are also several other distinguished institutions of higher learning near Goochland, including the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond, and Randolph-Macon College.

Goochland’s growing industry is balanced out with a firm commitment to controlled growth, which allows the county to retain its suburban charm.
