Long & Foster Living
Church Hill, VA

Church Hill real estate is considered the home of Richmond’s first neighborhood, and most of the city’s original thirty-two blocks are included in its boundaries. The neighborhood’s many grand houses were predominantly built before the Civil War, and classical architecture dominates Church Hill real estate. Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne styles are all on display, with Church Hill’s historic ambiance further enhanced by brick sidewalks and gas street lamps. Many Church Hill real estate owners take great pride in this rich history and are active participants in its preservation.

Chimborazo Park, the site of the nation’s largest Civil War hospital, is just one of a number of parks located in and around Church Hill. St. John’s Mews, a public garden created in 1965, and Libby Terrace, which offers a stunning view of the James River, are two other well-known green spaces.

St. John’s Church, the only Colonial structure that remains intact, is one of Church Hill’s most famous landmarks. Built on Church Hill real estate in 1741, the church was the site of Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech. Today, it is an active Episcopal church serving the Church Hill community as well as a National Historic Landmark. It is also the center of the neighborhood’s historic district, which was established in 1975 by the Historic Richmond Foundation. Developmental control in this area is retained by the city, and preservation of the neighborhood’s historic integrity is the ultimate goal. As a result, Church Hill real estate is highly valued.
